A Hawk’s Restless Pursuit

I had a dream I was a hawk, perched upon the edge of my nest that sovereignly crested the tallest peak. With my wings cramped due to extended confinement atop that vaulted solitary realm, I eagerly awaited my long anticipated flight. With unyielding attention and a stillness that surprised me, the moment of summons approached. For what I awaited I could not conceive, but I knew that I would know. And so, as the first beacon of sunlight arced out from beyond the horizons end, my internal flame blazed anew — I was off. This nest was my prison, my home, and the only life I had ever known. More so, I subtly felt it to be the center of the world: the cosmic world tree and the fount of being from which all life springs. Be it as it may, it had become my cage, and its hinges had finally been torn.

Cresting through the clouds and soaring on my newly exalted freedom, I raced through that celestial sky with a furious speed, unknown to even the most wicked demons. Though the aim of my flight was shrouded to my conscious mind, an inner passion carried me onward as a star through the sky.

Soon enough, a faint fae glimmer became clear in front. Alluring yet ephemeral, it ignited my wonder to no end and became the resolute objective of my pursuit. With ever maddening haste, my speed evolved as my desire grew, until I soared like the demon king seated within his hellish chariot of fire. I had to know the source of that evanescence and claim it as my own.

For a seemingly endless age of chase I blindly followed that single desire, until my wings failed me and I had no choice to land. During my flight, as singleminded as that desire had been, I had no remembrance of even perceiving the lands that raced beneath me. Not once had I looked down to see where I’d been and to where I was going. The faerie lust had turned me fiendishly mad, and the adventure that I had longed for passed me by in my blindness

And so, with failing strength and my inner flame reduced to somber smoldering embers, I glided down with the fate of the winds, graceful as an amber fallen leaf. I found myself within an oaken forest grove that emanated a presence my soul yearned for. With a motherly embrace, this wooded realm cooled my desire, and in its stead kindled a love for the simplicity of inherent being.

To my surprise, my faerie friend flitted down in whimsical delight, hoping to witness my wonder first hand. It danced to and fro and all through my new home, alight with the playful joy a young child has while laughing at its own prank. She stopped right in front of my eyes, and slowly made her way to my chest. Slowly and unhesitatingly, she melded her spirit to mine, and nestled herself deep within my heart.
